Pakistani activist for girls’ education Malala Yousafzai married Asser Malik, General Manager of Pakistan Cricket Board’s High Performance Centre, in an intimate ceremony, called nikkah, in the UK on Tuesday (November 9). The families of the couple were present for the ceremony. While the wedding news of the Nobel Laureate filled her hearts with joy, the curiosity about her husband left many scrolling social media profiles. A source in the PCB told PTI, Malik is a top performing officer in the cricket board, and joined High Performance Centre in Lahore nearly two years back as manager. From 2018, Malik has been into sports management. His LinkedIn profile says he has brought the world’s largest amateur cricket league (Last Man Stands – LMS) to Pakistan. His bio also says he has designed player development programs for Multan Sultans – a Twenty20 franchise cricket team in Pakistan Super League. According to his profile, the 31-year-old sports enthusiast graduated in 2012 from Pakistan’s Lahore University of Management Sciences, and pursued further education from Aitchison College in Lahore, Pakistan. This year, Malik surprised Yousafzai with a special birthday treat. Shah Rukh Khan’s life-size cut-out was placed for the 24-year-old. For the unversed, Yousafzai is SRK’s fan, and adores the superstar. She earlier had expressed her desire to meet the actor and invited him to the Oxford University to deliver a lecture. Yousafzai had also shared pictures of her 24th birthday, but refrained from sharing any image with Malik. Hence, it could be assumed that the couple kept their relationship under wraps. Going by Malik’s social media posts, it can be assumed that the couple have known each other since 2018 (or even before) and formed a close friendship. Yousafzai gained international recognition for her activism against the Taliban’s efforts to stop girls from attending school in Pakistan. Malik often retweets the young activist’s social cause messages from his official handle on the microblogging site. In July 2019, the couple hung out with Pakistan Head Coach Saqlain Mushtaq and businessman-politician Ali Khan Tareen during Pakistan’s match with New Zealand and South Africa. The special ceremony was shot by photographer Malin Fezehai in the beautiful backdrop of autumn leaves. Fezehai has been working with Yousafzai and her foundation Malala Fund for the past six years. Yousafzai, dressed in a tea pink suit and classic jewellery, carried out the wedding formalities at her Birmingham home with Malik, who looked dapper in a suit. The Oxford graduate’s comments about marriage to Vogue magazine had stirred controversy in June, where she had revealed that she is not sure if she wants to ever get married. Yousafzai moved to the UK in 2012 after she was shot in the head by a member of the Taliban when she was 15. In 2014, she won the Nobel Peace Prize at the age of 17, becoming the youngest laureate of the prize. She shared the prize with child rights activist Kailash Satyarthi. Last year, she graduated from Oxford University with a degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics.
