Poitier was first married to Juanita Hardy from April 29, 1950, until 1965. Poitier became a resident of Mount Vernon in Westchester County, New York in 1956, though they raised their family in Stuyvesant, New York, in a house on the Hudson River. In 1959, Poitier began a nine-year affair with actress Diahann Carroll. He married Joanna Shimkus, a Canadian former actress, on January 23, 1976, and they remained married for the rest of his life. He had four daughters with his first wife (Beverly, Pamela, Sherri, and Gina) and two with his second (Anika and Sydney Tamiia) In addition to his six daughters, Poitier had eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. When Hurricane Dorian hit the Bahamas in September 2019, Poitier’s family had 23 missing relatives. On January 6, 2022, Poitier died at his home in Los Angeles, California, at the age of 94. He was born prematurely to Bahamian parents who were vacationing in Miami; his parents remained in Miami for three months to nurse the weak infant back to health. His parents, Reginald James Poitier and Evelyn were farmers. He grew up in poverty and was showing signs of becoming delinquent. Concerned, his father sent him to live with his brother in New York. He worked as a dishwasher to make ends meet. He never received any formal education and was taught to read by a Jewish waiter who coached him after working hours. His first marriage was to Juanita Hardy from 1950 to 1965. The couple had four daughters. He married actress Joanna Shimkus in 1976 with whom he has two daughters. This great black actor is the oldest living man to have won the Academy Award for Best Actor. Sidney L. Poitier KBE was a Bahamian-American actor, film director, activist, and ambassador. In 1964, he was the first black person and first Bahamian to win the Academy Award for Best Actor. He received two Academy Award nominations, ten Golden Globes nominations, two Primetime Emmy Awards nominations, six BAFTA nominations, eight Laurel nominations, and one Screen Actors Guild Awards (SAG) nomination.
