September 6th–October 18th, 2019: The Official Announcement, The Release Of Music Video Teasers, And The Release Of The Single

On September 6th, 2019, Twice announced their upcoming Japanese album for the first time through their website and social network services. This upcoming Japanese album would be their second album to be released in Japan, after they released #Twice two years ago. #Twice is Twice’s first compilation album, also their Japanese debut album. In #Twice, there is one lead single, which is the Japanese version of “TT”. For this second Japanese album, it hadn’t been revealed how many and what title would the lead single be. On that announcement day, they only announced that they would release a Japanese album soon, without giving any further details. A month later, specifically on October 17th, 2019, Warner Music Japan released two video teasers for the single. The titles of those teasers were Teaser #1 and Teaser #2. Those teasers were released on the same day, with a gap of only a few hours. Through those teasers, it was revealed that the single would be titled “Fake & True”. The next day, on October 18th, 2019, “Fake & True” was released officially as a single. This single was released digitally through various music sites. On that day also, the music video for “Fake & True” was released through Twice’s Japanese official YouTube channel.

October 29th–November 19th, 2019: The “Fake & True” Promotion, The Release Of A Spoiler Video And An Information Video of &Twice, And The Release Date Of &Twice

After the release of this single, Twice started their promotion period for “Fake & True”. During that period, Warner Music Japan prepared some short videos to give spoilers about the upcoming album. The first short video that was released by the label was a spoiler video. The date of the spoiler video release was October 29th, 2019. Through this spoiler video, we can see that the upcoming album would be titled &Twice. This spoiler video was filled with a medley of all the tracks on &Twice. The following day, on October 30th, 2019, the label also released an information video for the &Twice album. The purpose of this information video release was to give information to Japanese Once’s about the &Twice physical album versions. The video also revealed some extra videos (like behind-the-scene videos and live performances videos) to those who would buy a specific version of the physical album. There would be four versions of &Twice, which were Standard Edition, Limited Edition A, Limited Edition B, and Once Japan Edition. Through this information video also, it was unveiled that there would be three lead singles for &Twice, which were “Happy Happy”, “Breakthrough”, and “Fake & True”. About two weeks later, specifically on November 19th, 2019, Warner Music Japan released &Twice officially. The album was released digitally and physically. Together with the release of the &Twice physical album, the “Fake & True” physical version was also released officially on this day. After the album release, Twice kept promoting “Fake & True” and the &Twice album in Japanese music programs. You can see their Standard Edition cover for &Twice, here.

February 5th, 2020: The Release Of &Twice-Repackage

“Fake & True” was released again for the second time as a lead single of this repackage album. This repackage album was simply titled &Twice-Repackage. It was released three months after the original release, which was on February 5th, 2020. There were two lead singles of this repackage album, which were “Swing” and “Fake & True”. You can see the cover for &Twice-Repackage, here.

Story Of “Fake & True”: A Synth-J-pop Track About Being Truthful And Away From Fakeness

The one who wrote the “Fake & True” lyrics was Jam9. The composer and arranger of this song was Kass. Fake & True is a J-pop and a synth-pop song, mixed with retro notes, deep-house elements, and vibrant brasses. “Fake & True” lyrically describes someone’s feeling to be true to himself/herself. He/she believes and feels truthful to him/her own self that he/she can reach his/her own success and life goals. He/she doesn’t want to be a fake person anymore, by remembering all day about his/her failure he/she has done. Rather than keeping those failures in his/her mind, he/she just wants to accept those failures, be truthful, and move forward to reach his/her goals.

MV Of “Fake & True”: A Glamorous Music Video Emphasizing Fakeness And Trueness

As a lead single of &Twice, there’s a music video made for “Fake & True”. A production team named Vikings League (Vishop) directed and produced this music video. In this whole music video for “Fake & True”, Vishop really heavily pointed to the members’ glamorous sides. There were a lot of visual effects used for producing this music video, such as virtual reality (VR) goggles and masks, broken realities with glitching sounds, and some futuristic cameras. They also used some technologies to detect something fake or something true, like lie detectors. Because this song has a “questioning reality” theme, classical graphics of the story about Adam and Eve were also seen in this music video. Adam and Eve is a story in the Holy Bible, which is written in some initial parts of The Genesis Book. This music video also features the choreography specifically made for “Fake & True”. Until August 27th, 2021, this music video already has more than 50 million views on YouTube. When the &Twice-Repackage album was released, the new version of the “Fake & True” music video was released officially on the same day too. This music video was titled “The Truth Game”, and this music video was only released physically through the repackage album. “The Truth Game” was not a completely different music video; it was only an edited version of the original music video. Through this new music video, Japanese Once’s could see more close-up shots of Twice members. They also could see more scenes related to the lie detectors. But, this new music video doesn’t really stress the choreography, so you need to see the original music video to see more of the choreography scenes.
